House Bill 294 is an anti-voter Trojan Horse

The elections bill introduced by Rep Bill Seitz last week has a few sensible election reforms providing skimpy cover for a host of unnecessary anti-voter provisions.

House Bill 294 would limit our freedom to vote by:

  • Limiting the use of dropboxes,

  • Cutting the time to request absentee ballots by a full week,

  • Canceling early voting the Monday before Election Day,

  • Banning pre-paid postage for absentee mailings, and

  • Imposing confusing ID rules that create unnecessary red tape for election officials and long lines for voters.

As always, these changes would have a disproportionately negative impact on Black and Brown voters, students, low-income Ohioans, people with disabilities, active duty military, and seniors.

The authors of the bill say they want to improve Ohio's elections. Great! It is easy to do that without making it harder to vote. We would love to stop this bill in its tracks -- but at the very least we should push to remove the provisions that are harmful to voters and strengthen the ones that would improve elections in Ohio.
