The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is targeting Mike Carey in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District as vulnerable. We can affect the makeup of Congress by making our voices heard. Carey has REFUSED to face his constituents. We've called, we've visited his office, we've emailed, and we have sent him a certified invitation. No response! We are holding a town hall to hear from YOU. We will meet to express our opinions about the votes Mike Carey has taken to cut Social Security, jobs, healthcare, cutting taxes for the very wealthy, and destroying climate initiatives. We've invited previous candidates from the 15th District to share their experiences running for Congress, and ways we can make a difference in our District. Sign up now to hear how we can work together to speak to our Congressional representative. Register for the event HERE.

TAKE ACTION THIS WEEK
1. OPPOSE SB 153 – Require Citizenship Verification Before an Elector May Vote (OHIO’S VERSION OF THE “SAVE” ACT!)
What’s new: SB 153 received a third proponent/opponent/interested party hearing on 5/27/25.
What it does: The bill would require verification of an elector's citizenship before the elector may vote and to modify procedures regarding voter registration, voter roll maintenance, absent voting, and election petitions. SB 153 was referred to the Senate General Government Committee. (HB 233 is the House version of this bill.) Read this article for more information.
What to do (URGENT!)
QUICK ACTION: Send a message through the ACLU.
Tell these members of the Senate General Government Committee you OPPOSE SB 153:
Kristina Roegner, chair - 614-466-4823; roegner@ohiosenate.gov
Theresa Gavarone, vice chair (and bill sponsor) - 614-466-8060; gavarone@ohiosenate.gov
Willis Blackshear, ranking member – 614-466-4538; blackshear@ohiosenate.gov
Jane Timken, member – 614-466-0626; timken@ohiosenate.gov
Ask your senator to say no to SB 153, and ask your representative to reject HB 233.
Write a letter to the editor in support of your local BOE. See this LTE toolkit
Sample script:
Hi. My name is __________ and I’m calling from [full address if leaving a message]. I’m calling to urge [elected official] to reject SB 153. This bill attacks the citizen initiative process and threatens voters with potential prosecution. It would disenfranchise eligible voters and shrink the electorate. Essentially, SB 153 and its counterpart, HB 233, would criminalize democracy! Even though lawmakers have said there is no need for more big changes in election law, SB 153 represents a huge overhaul. We need to slow down and allow time for implementation of other recently passed election bills. Our boards of election are already under-resourced and overburdened. Adding bureaucratic and financial burdens without providing additional resources is unfair to Board of Elections staff. I expect [elected official] to say NO to SB 153 and its companion bill, HB 233.

2. OPPOSE HB 42 – Require Certain Agencies To Collect and Report Citizenship Data.
What it does: HB 42 would require certain agencies, including the Department of Education and Workforce, to collect and report data concerning the citizenship or immigration status of persons with whom they come into contact. Read more in this analysis and the Capital Journal.
What’s new: This bill received a second proponent hearing on 5/20/25 in the House Government Oversight Committee.
What to do (URGENT)
Tell these members of the House Government Oversight Committee you OPPOSE this bill:
Thomas Hall, chair – 614-644-5094; rep46@ohiohouse.gov
Ron Ferguson, vice-chair – 614-466-3735; rep96@ohiohouse.gov
Latyna Humphrey, ranking member - 614-466-8010; rep2@ohiohouse.gov
Email Ohio representatives using this action tool.
Sample call script:
Hi. My name is _____________ and I live at [give full address if leaving a message]. I’m contacting you to urge you to stop House Bill 42 from moving forward. This bill would require all public schools to collect and report student information to the federal government. It is a misguided attempt to help federal immigration officials deport more children and families. HB 42 isn’t about helping schools. It’s a political move that puts vulnerable students in harm’s way. It breaks the trust between families and schools, risks student safety, and could hurt children from all backgrounds. I urge [elected official] to say NO to HB 42. Ohio’s kids deserve safe classrooms rather than surveillance and fear.
We are committed to having a positive impact in our local community! For the second and final time, this week we are asking for donations to support Adrienne Hoods’ "B-Eazy" day to honor her son Henry Green who was killed by police. Read more about the B-Eazy Day of Celebration and Family and make a donation at this link. Thank you for your generosity!
