Join us as we go out and talk with potential voters and help them register or update their voter registration. Not trained? No problem, watch this 14 minute video, review the slides, and check your knowledge here. Need supplies? Special Collection Opportunity for the CSC Effort
As some of you know, the Columbus Safety Collective (CSC) petition effort is now an all-volunteer endeavor (no paid solicitors) and the campaign will continue until January. If we can get it onto the ballot, it likely will win. However, we really need more "boots on the ground" to make sure we get the necessary signatures!

Here’s an opportunity to jump in! Weiland's annual PARTY IN THE PARKING LOT, Saturday, AUGUST 23, 11:30am to 3:30pm. It’s a perfect place to collect signatures from City of Columbus voters!

If you need booklets or have questions, contact Jackie (jackieoep@gmail.com) or Cheryl (cherylrsgrossman@gmail.com).

This week’s Actions!

1. Oppose SB 172

The bill would specify that persons who are unlawfully present in the United States are not “privileged” from arrest. This bill has already passed the Ohio Senate (6/18/2025). It was introduced in the House (6/23/25), but has not yet been referred to a committee. More information in this OCJ article and this analysis.

What can you do now?
Urge
your state representative to say NO if this bill comes to the floor.

Sample call script:
Hi. My name is __________, and I live [full address if leaving a message]. I’m calling to ask [elected official] to oppose SB 172. This bill would allow an arrest or detention to happen anywhere in Ohio under any circumstances, regardless of the law that extends a “privilege” from arrest in certain cases. Federal, state, or local law enforcement agencies or officers could arrest people, with or without a warrant, whether for an administrative, civil, or criminal reason. There are very good reasons to allow “privilege” exceptions, especially in certain public spaces. For example, the court has a responsibility to ensure due process, which is hard to do when victims, witnesses, and defendants won’t come to the courthouse to testify and participate in cases because they fear arrest. Trial fairness is jeopardized, which hurts citizens as well as non-citizens. As we have seen recently, undocumented people have good reason to fear showing up in court, since a number of them have been denied due process or have been mistakenly deported or sent to notorious prisons. I urge [elected official] to say NO to SB 172. Thanks for your consideration.

2. Support efforts to demand that Russia return Ukrainian children

At the Alaska Summit with Putin, President Trump handed Putin a letter from Melania Trump in which she requested that Putin think of the children traumatized by war. In 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant to Mr Putin, citing child abductions (a low estimate is about 19,000) as a central charge. When Congress returns from its recess, they will vote on S.Res 236/H. Res.564--the resolutions demanding Russia return the abducted children.

Call your congressional representatives and demand they co-sponsor and fast track these resolutions. Make it clear that no peace agreement should be agreed to until every abducted child is returned to Ukraine.

What’s On the Porch?

In addition to three different sets of postcards and the door hangers on the porch at 437 Piedmont Rd in Columbus, a new addition this week are the “Free DC” rally signs. These are available for you to take and place in your car, in a window, or display prominently anywhere of your choosing! FYI, the John Gatiss for Westerville City Council cards can now also be checked out and returned from 151 Central Ave in Westerville.

Many thanks to Ana Underman who is organizing the Indivisible Central Ohio reading and learning club, called “Knowledge is Power.” The first three meetings are now live on Mobilize! Please check out, share, and RSVP for events that interest you!

ICO Gives Back: Volunteer and Donation Opportunities

Donate!

This month, ICO is highlighting one of our partners, Community Development For All People, located in Columbus' south side, at 497 Parsons Avenue. Run by the Methodist church, it has excellent outreach into an under-resourced neighborhood community, including assisting the unhoused. Donations HERE.

Volunteer!
Columbus Food Rescue can use your help! Rescuers are essential in diverting good food from going to waste and delivering it where it’s needed most. Volunteer sign-ups are done in this app, with the schedule of available rescues there. Volunteer FAQs can be found here. In addition to rescuing food, there are opportunities in Ro’s Kitchen, where food donated by the greater Columbus community is transformed into healthy, fresh, and tasty meals. There are also opportunities with the Veggie Van Pop-Up Markets. So many opportunities to have an impact in the community!
