Volunteer for the OH12 Graduating HS Seniors Voter Registration Project!
** VOLUNTEER NOW for this May-July project with a quick email reply! **
An Easy Voter Registration (VR) project is starting later in May. We will soon be reaching out for volunteers to work their neighborhood. We will be calling many OH12 members to help OR let us know NOW if you are interested with an email to Scott Solsman at ssolsman@gmail.com.
As we search for ways to register likely progressive voters, young voters are a priority. They overwhelmingly voted for Biden last fall. And young people are very concerned about many progressive goals.
We have a targeted method to find and register those turning 18. In both Columbus and some suburban school districts, we have a directory of unregistered but graduating HS seniors from which we can prepare lists.
The project is for an OH12 volunteer to adopt a precinct(s) or area near their home. Relying on our lists of unregistered graduating HS seniors, we'll visit that residence and register that new potential voter. This will be an outdoor, COVID safe activity!
We are preparing:
Our recently created lists of unregistered HS seniors with names and addresses by precinct or other designated area of a manageable size;
A Sign-up Genius sign-up for your volunteer area;
Materials & a script;
Voter Registration packets to leave at the door if the graduating senior is not home, including our own OH12 "Be a Voter!" card*;
Virtual Voter Registration trainings;
"I Am Vaccinated" buttons!
Ready to volunteer to register more progressive voters in our community? Email Scott Solsman at ssolsman@gmail.com.
* What's the thinking behind the text and images on the card? The OH12 VR Youth Subcommittee has been using data from the the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) to target messaging for unregistered voters ages 18-29. The top issues for this group are affordable healthcare, climate change and the environment, and racial justice. Ohio has a large youth population with 1.8 million eligible voters, generally high voter registration, and average voter turnout, creating space for young people to influence Ohio's elections.
