Donate books to prisoners

One more way to give!
The message below was a post on the Facebook page of OH12 East. We are inspired to join in! See info at the bottom about dropping off books in Columbus as well.

The Licking County NAACP is collecting book donations for Redbird Books to Prisoners, for our Martin Luther King Jr. Day service activity. We are looking for mostly paperback books, in good condition, about the following topics: Music, Business, Sports, Health, Sci-Fi, Religion, Art, Comic Books, Graphic Novels, books by Indigenous/Native American authors, and books about Homesteading. (OH12 East is also accepting donations of gift cards from Kicks Mix Bookstore in Newark Ohio, or Readers’ Garden Bookstore in Granville -- to support local businesses and purchase specific books incarcerated individuals have requested. Please review your donations to avoid the content below.

  • Hardback: only allowed at about half of locations

  • Wear: some locations don't allow worn, dirty, or smelly books

  • Content: NO instructions on committing crime; no images of nudity or weapons

  • Marking: items with writing and highlighting may get rejected

  • Stickers: no stickers or adhesives allowed, must remove before sending

  • Accessories: no CDs, spiral binding, staples, etc. Must be removed before sending!

  • Maps: no maps of local area allowed, including general atlases
