Heads Up: Important Events Coming Up Soon

Indivisible Central Ohio members are always busy, and there’s always a lot going on, but we wanted to call your attention to a couple of important events coming up soon.

1. Fair Maps Day! Wednesday, Sept 17, 10:30am-12:30pm
This fall, politicians will re-draw Ohio’s congressional map (no bipartisan agreement last time around so the current map only lasted four years). Yes, our current map is gerrymandered, with 10 Republicans and only 5 Democrats when a proportional split would be 8/7 or 9/6.

Unfortunately, this round of redrawing is probably only going to make things worse. Republicans have circulated both a 12/3 map and a 13/2 map!! It’s sickening, unconstitutional, and insulting to every one of us who have been working to end gerrymandering and for fair maps for so long!

That’s why Fair Districts and Equal Districts – the two coalitions working to end gerrymandering – are coming together to kick off the redistricting season with a show of force at the Ohio Statehouse. With your help, we will be able to encircle the Statehouse with our signs and chants and demands for fair representation!

If you hate gerrymandering and care about fairness, this event is really important! Please add it to your calendar now. Register HERE

2. Indivisible Central Ohio End of Summer Picnic, 9/20, 5-8pm
Volunteers with Indivisible Central Ohio work hard, so it's important to take time to relax and refresh. How better than at the Hoover Sailing Club with your friends and fellow activists from Indivisible Central Ohio? All are welcome to join us, even if you’re new to the group. ICO will have veggie and regular burgers and trimmings. Bring a side, salad, dessert or drink to share! BYOB. Please register HERE so we can make sure we have the right amount of supplies!

3. Save The Date: NO KINGS II on October 18!
October 18 has been set as the next day of national protest – and this one is going to be the biggest by far, both nationwide and here in central Ohio!

Central Ohio groups are coming together to put on a series of local events earlier in the day all across the region that will culminate in a rally at the Ohio Statehouse at 4pm. Indivisible Central Ohio is working on this with a dozen or more local groups, and also with 50501 Columbus.

As early as next week we should have a tentative list of locations with sign ups. For now, please circle October 18 on your calendar and start to spread the word about this important day of protest. NO KINGS IN AMERICA!!

Every week there are rallies and protests all over central Ohio! You can follow what’s happening in the Events section of our website, indivisible central ohio.org. Also check mobilize.us/indivisiblecentralohio/ for all our Indivisible Central Ohio events.

This week’s Actions!

1. Take action to protect immigrants
Lately, a lot of people have been asking what they can do to protect immigrants. Indivisible national initiated a program that involves asking businesses to post signs showing their support for immigrants, and to take actions to protect their immigrant employees. Check out this post on BluSky about one person’s experience.

Here in Columbus, a team has formed to approach neighborhood businesses. They’re going to be canvassing as a group this Sunday, September 14, meeting up at 2pm at Lox Bagel Shop, 772 N. High St. If you are interested in going out with them this weekend, or even just interested in getting involved or learning more, please sign up here and you’ll be contacted by someone to get you onboarded into the team. Questions? Reply to this email.

2. Demand that ICE be barred from the courthouse
While the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas had issued new rules prohibiting immigration arrests within the courthouse grounds and courtrooms altogether, the Franklin County Municipal Court has not followed suit and had stated that they will continue to allow ICE officials in to detain and arrest people in the building. It is critical that the Municipal Court remain free of ICE so that people can take care of their day-to-day business safely. Call Franklin County Municipal Court Communications Director Jodi Andes at 614-621-9389 to say the Court must prohibit ICE from entering the Courthouse! (Note: She appreciates these calls!)

3. Tell Congress: Stop Trump's Plan to Let AI Deny Medicare Coverage
Donald Trump and Dr. Oz want to let Artificial Intelligence (AI) choose which procedures Medicare will cover for individual patients -- with AI companies being paid based on how much money they save by denying people’s coverage. This cruel ploy comes as Medicare faces an urgent funding crisis thanks to Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill. None of this “cost-saving” would be necessary if Trump and the GOP weren't driving up healthcare costs and starving our healthcare system of funds. Email Congress NOW: Demand that they stop AI-powered healthcare denials and use the upcoming funding deadline to restore healthcare.

Bonus Project: “Do The Write Thing” thank you cards!
Even though an appeals court has now determined it can stay open, send a ‘Thank You’ card to the tribe who sued and helped temporarily stop our newest internment camp in Florida from being built and operated, here is their mailing address:

Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida
P.O. Box 440021
Tamiami Station
FL 33194

The contact info for the judge who ruled in favor of the tribe:
U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen M Williams: williams@flsd.uscourts.gov

The environmental groups who partnered with the tribe to get the site shut down:
